About the Profession

The Health Sciences program offers a broad, in-depth overview of health care. It is designed to provide students with an appropriate knowledge base and to facilitate the development of the analytical skills and personal characteristics necessary for health care leadership positions.

Track I is designed to enable licensed, registered, or certified health care practitioners who are graduates of a regionally accredited associate's degree health care program to earn a bachelor's degree.

Track II is designed to enable administrative support personnel in academic health science centers and other health care environments to earn a bachelor's degree. Its content focuses on the administrative functions necessary to maintain and operate successful health care centers.

Both Track I and Track II provide students with opportunities for career advancement when the bachelor's degree is required for promotion into management and leadership positions.

The Health Sciences program is designed for but not limited to part-time, non-traditional students. Online instruction is the primary method of content delivery. The program is offered on a three-semester-per-year basis.

Students may be admitted in the fall, spring, or summer semester. Students who successfully complete two three-hour courses per semester can generally expect a timely completion of the health sciences degree, whether in Track I or Track II. Advisors are available by telephone, e-mail, or in person at several counseling centers throughout the state.

Students who satisfactorily complete all the requirements will be awarded the Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences from The University of Mississippi. Candidates for a degree must have an overall grade point average (GPA) in University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) coursework of 2.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
